Walking Break - Day 3

Ambleside to Coniston

Time to leave Brathay Lodge and Ambleside behind and change accommodation to Orchard Cottage in Coniston.   The walk takes you over Loughrigg Fell past the Tarn to Elterwater. Here you'll find  the Britannia Inn for a refreshment stop. When fully refreshed leave Elterwater by taking a short uphill route past old quarry waste heaps before dropping down into Little Langdale, after passing through a couple of working farms you will need to cross Slaters Bridge. This pack horse bridge is much photographed and when looking at it you wonder how it has stood for so many years. After another short climb via a gorse surrounded path smelling oddly of coconut when in bloom, out of one valley and dropping into another, you reach Tilberthwaite a small hamlet at the top of a long valley. After walking the length of the valley the path takes you to Coniston through woodland smothered in bluebells in May/June. On arrival in Coniston Orchard Cottage waits to welcome you for your 1st night stay there.
